Catalogue Note

Circa 1704, the founder of Child'🍸s Bank, Sir Francis Child, the Elder, moved to 42 Lincoln's Inn Field, the residence which his son, Robert Child, had purchased two years prior.  One of the largest houses on the square, Sir Francis used the residence to display his collection of sixty-seven pictures which he had acquired in 1697 on his tour of the Netherlands, Flanders, and Germany.  Based upon a 1706 inventory of that collection, it is likely that the present painting was one of these acquisitions.

Almost one hundred years later, in 1804, Sir Francis' great-great grandaughter, Sarah Sophia Child, married Lord George Villiers, fifth earl of Jersey, thus merging the Child and Villie༺rs families.

We 💟are grateful to Dr. Giancarlo S🍸estieri, who, based upon photographs, has suggested an attribution to Pandolfo Reschi.
