Catalogue Note
Accompanied by a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production with black, applied Arabic figures in yellow gold in 1999 and its subsequent sale on July 15th, 1999.
According to our research, since the launch of Ref. 5070 in 1998, fewer than thirty examples in yellow gold have appeared at auction. Favored for its sporty, elegant design, Ref. 5070 is the second largest wristwatch produced by Patek Philippe, with its diameter falling 0.8mm short of that of the Sky Moon. Ref. 5070 also represents Patek Philippe's return to production of chronograph watches after an almost 30-year break. The last chronograph model produced before this was Ref. 1463, for which production was halted in the late 1960s The inspiration for Ref. 5070 was Ref. 2512, a split-seconds chronograph produced by Patek Philippe between 1950 and 1952. The case and dial designs are very much alike. For an example of Ref. 2512, see Huber & Banbery, Patek Philippe Wristwatches, Vol. 2, Second Edition, p. 274.
