Catalogue Note

The present work depicts the house and gardens owned by Henri Martin in the medieval village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, east of Cahors, which is considered one of the most beautiful areas of the Lot valley. Martin purchased this house around 1911 and eventually sold it to the surrealist artist and poet, André Breton. Maison et jardin à Saint-Cirq-Lapopie is a scintilꦜlating example of Martin at his most bold and intense, combining colour and texture as a means of capturing the intense heat of the French midday sun.
