Catalogue Note
The artists' quarter of Montmartre was one of Utrillo's favorite subjects. Louis Libaude's introduction in the catalogue for Utrillo's first exhibition in 1913 exemplifies Utrillo's love for this Parisian neighborhood: 'Maurice Utrillo is the painter of Montmartre. Since Lépine, I believe no artist has been able to render with such acute sensitivity the sad charm of this little provincial town, isolated on the summit of Paris' (in Gustave von Groschwitz, Maurice Utrillo (exhibition catalogue), Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, 1963, p. 4).
The central focus of this work is the house of Hector Berlioz (fig. 1), the French Romantic composer, located at the intersection of Rue du Mont-Cenis and R💙ue St. Vincent.
