Catalogue Note
This drawing captures Henri Matisse as he is familiar from many celebrated photographs (fig. 1). Henri Matisse dans son intérieur belongs to a series of drawings executed when Matisse posed, on his own request, for Giacometti. 'The quick sketches,' as James Lord points out, 'have all the fresh impromptu vividness of Matisse's own drawings, and thus they convey with peculiar power the commanding presence and poignant appearance of Henri Matisse at the very end of his extraordinary life' (J. Lord, Alberto Giacometti Drawings, London, 1971, p. 22).
