Description
- Krishna Jambhala
- Opaque watercolor on paper
- Dimensions: 4 1/8 by 3 1/8 in (10.5 by 7.9 cm)
The tsakali depicting the naked and ithyphallic golden-bodied deity stepping in pratyalidha and trampling a recumbent demon on a lotus pedestal, a nakula gripped at the neck by Jambhala’s left hand, his right holding a kapala to his heart.
Catalogue Note
Although the iconographical color of the deity is black, the use of gold to portray the dark skinned god adheres to the Buddhist concept that all deities may be represented in the regal color of precious gold. Compare the drawing of similar gold on red background tsakali, now in the Newark Museum, see Heller, 1999, figs, 91-4, p. 135.
