Catalogue Note
The iconography of ragamala system was enumerated by Mesakarna, a court priest in Rewa who wrote his Ragamala in 1570. The inscription above the painting identifies it as Kunkuni Ragini but its pictur🥀ization bears little relation to the prescribed iconography in Mesakarna's text. It is known that in some instances, artists digressed from the text and introduced their own creative elements into the paintings. The present lot is an example of one such case.💃
For a very different representaton of the same Ragini in the Pahari tradition see M. S. Randhawa, Kangra Ragamala Paintings, New Delhi, 1971, no. 71, p. 80.
