The Four Milk-Maids was painted in 1954, the same year that Sabavala exhibited at the Venice Biennale. The artist states that it was inspired by  'a rustic scene - whilst driving from Bombay to New Delhi in the early 1950s. Colourful,exuberant - the four milkmaids swing along merrily chatting - all this as we were approaching Rajasthan.' (Jehangir Sabavala, Mumbai, 2007).  The lively immediacy gives this early example of Sabavala's work its immense appeal.
