Catalogue Note
The Upper and Lower Yosemite Falls, when measured together with the cascades between them, form one of the highest waterfalls iꦉn the world: the total drop is nearly 2,500 feet from the Yosemite Creek above to the Merced River below. In this early Watkins dome-topped view, taken from across the wooded valley floor, the overwhelming height of the Upper Fall is seen in its correct proportion to the smaller Lower Fall.
Weston Naef and the Carleton Watkins Mammoth Plate Catalogue Raisonné Project locate 16 other prints of this image in institutional collections, as well 𓆏as three♛ prints that have appeared on the market in recent years.
