Condition

These prints, each slightly warm-toned and on double-weight paper with a surface sheen, are in generally excellent condition. 'Skier' is mounted on a slick white board mount with a matte verso. Adams's early 'Ansel Easton Adams' letterpress label with logo of repeating As in a black circle is pasted to the front of the mount. We believe that this print was made no later than 1932, when Adams ceased using his middle name. When examined in raking light, a few tiny deposits of the photographer's original retouching are visible in the lower portion of the print, as well as a few very faint, light scratches in the upper portion of the print. The edges of the mount are slightly rubbed, and the corners are bumped. The reverse of the mount is appropriately age-darkened. 'Skis, Yosemite,' a luminous print, exhibits some wear at the edges and has bumped corners. In raking light, tiny deposits of the photographer's original retouching are visible in the lower left quadrant, as well as a 1 1/2-inch raised, linear mark in the top margin, the result of an indentation on the reverse. The upper corners on the reverse of the print have triangular residue, likely from corners in an album or on a mount.

Catalogue Note

Skis, Yosemite comes originally from the Estate of Don Tresidder, who was president of the Yosemite Park & Curry Company from 1924 until his death in 1948.  Tresidder, an avid skier, is responsible for introducing a 🅺winter sports program at Yosemite National Park and commissioned Adams in 1929 and 1930 to produce images relating to the sport.
