Description

  • Ansel Adams
  • 'clearing winter storm, yosemite valley'
mounted, signed by the photographer in pencil on the mount, his Carmel studio stamps (BMFA 7 and 8), titled in an unidentified hand in ink, on the reverse, matted, circa 1938, printed in the 1960s or early 1970s (Morgan & Morgan, pl. 71; Portfolios, p. 49; Yosemite and the Range of Light, cover; Examples, p. 102; Autobiography, p. 243; Classic Images, pl. 46; Letters and Images, p. 369; Yosemite: Ansel Adams, pl. 1; Ansel Adams at 100, p. 89; 101 Years of California Photography, p. 128)

Condition

This print is in generally excellent condition. In strong raking light, a number of pencil-point-sized light impressions are visible in the upper left quadrant of the print. Also visible in raking light are a number of small deposits of the photographer's original retouching. The back of the mount has three small, approximately 1-inch square, remnants of adhesive tape at the top edge. Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamps 7 and 8 on the reverse of this print: 1963 to 1970.
