Condition

This photograph, on semi-glossy paper, is in very good to excellent condition. This presentation, on slick white board with a matte surface on the reverse and fully signed and dated on the mount, is wholly appropriate for a print produced during this period. There is minor edge wear, including slight lifting of the emulsion at the left side of the print that is visible only when the print is examined very closely. The flush-mount has begun to lift slightly from the secondary mount. When examined in raking light, tiny deposits of original retouching and extremely faint small scratches are visible in the upper right and lower left quadrants. This does not impact in a measurable way upon the beautiful appearance of this print. There is some slight unevenness in the surface of the print due to mounting. This is not readily apparent, except when the print is examined closely, nor does it affect the overall quality of the print. There is edge wear on the mount, the corners are bumped, and the upper left corner is creased. A 1/4-inch tear at the mount's lower right edge has disrupted the top white layer of the mount, and there is chipping around the tear. There is also small surface creasing of the mount just above the top edge of the print. A faint tide line is visible across the bottom edge of the mount. The reverse of the mount is age-darkened, and there is a circular deposit of indeterminate nature at the upper right corner. In addition to the photographer's title, negative, and edition number on the reverse, there are other notations; namely, 'IN 602-1,' '15 x 15 1/8,' and 'bk as is.'

Catalogue Note

Shell and Rock Arrangement was one of nine images by Weston that comprised the original 1932 Group f.64 exhibition at the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum, San Francisco.  With its sharp focus, strong detail, and great depth of field, Shell and Rock Arrangement illustrates the new, straight style that was the underlying principle of Group f.64.
