Description
- Edward Weston
- 'moonrise, death valley'
mounted, signed and dated by the photographer in pencil on the mount, titled by him in pencil on the reverse, overmatted, matted, 1939
Condition
This print, on a paper with a somewhat smooth surface, is in generally fair to good condition. Six drops of light brown, somewhat translucent, surface soiling are visible; three at the center of the right edge; one at the center left just above the mountains; one in the upper right in the sky; and one at the center of the bottom edge. In raking light, the following are visible: a number of light scratches, none of which breaks the emulsion; small deposits of the photographer's original retouching; and light silvering along the bottom edge. The edges of the print are lightly sunned and have a few small chips.
The overmat is adhered to the original beige mount, which have both been trimmed, and the bottom left corner of both are lightly bumped. On the front of the mount, within the area exposed by the overmat, a few small spots of soiling are visible. On the reverse, at the top edge of the print, a very small portion of the photographer's negative number is visible. The back of the mount has faint surface soiling.
The presentation of this print, with Weston's full signature and date on the mount, is typical of prints made by him during the 1930s.
