Description
- Edward Weston
- 'aspen valley, n. m.'
mounted, signed and dated by the photographer in pencil on the mount, titled and numbered 'NM-AV-3g' by him in pencil on the reverse, matted, 1938 (Conger 1192; Scholar as Collector, pl. 33)
Condition
This luminous print, on paper with a slightly glossy finish, is in generally good condition. The edges of the print are lightly sunned and have minor wear and a few small chips in the emulsion. In raking light, the following are visible: small deposits of the photographer's original retouching; a number of scattered light surface scratches, each approximately 1/4-to 1/2-inch long; and a few small indentations that do not break the emulsion.
The photograph is mounted to a beige board that is lightly age-darkened. There is edge wear, the corners are bumped and have pinholes, and there is soiling along the edges. On the back, there are a few areas where the top ply of the mount is missing, most likely from the removal of previous adhesive. One of these areas, at the top left corner, is missing a small amount of the photographer's handwritten negative number.
The presentation of this print, with Weston's full signature and date on the mount, just under the image, is typical of prints made by him during the 1930s.
