Condition
'Hilltop, Italy,' -this print, on Illustrator's Special paper, and with a 1/16-inch white margin, is in generally very good to excellent condition. As is typical of Strand's work of the period, the print's surface sheen is the result of a coating, possibly wax or varnish, that Strand favored in order to enhance the details of the image.
When examined in raking light, two small (1 1/4- and 3/4-inch) sharp creases are visible at the upper left corner. These have been retouched so that the creasing may have occurred when the print was made. Also, visible only in raking light, are deposits of original retouching in the sky area.
The photographer's numerical and printing notations on the back of the print, visible through the paper flush mount with the aid of light, are as follows: 'Ill,' 'F11,' '64,' and 'Double sky,' meaning that it is printed on Kodak Illustrator's Special paper, using an enlarging aperture of F11, a 64-second exposure, to be doubled in the sky area.
The portrait of Paul Strand is in generally excellent condition. There is some rubbing and tiny emulsion loss at the corners and along the left and right edges. When examined in raking light, tiny deposits of original retouching are visible. The reverse of the print reads, 'Paul Strand, portrait by Hazel Strand, Orgeval 1965. Please do not crop in reproduction. Kindly return this print to Paul Strand, Orgeval 75, Yvelines, France.'
