Description
- William Blake
- The Shepherd (Bindman 43; Bentley pl.4)
- 110 by 70 mm 4 3/8 by 2 3/4 in
- sheet 203 by 140 mm 8 by 5 1/2 in
Relief etching printed in light brown, with extensive hand-coloring in watercolor and additions in black ink, numbered 4 in black ink in the upper right corner, on wove paper, with unusually wide margins (showing deckle edge above and below) and with stitching holes visible in the left margin edge (partly filled in), some pale discoloration in the margin edges and around the edges of the image, a crease across the lower left margin corner, otherwise in good condition
Condition
The print is in good condition and presents itself well. There is some discoloration in the margins at the extreme edges of the sheet and a few minor fox marks. The verso has a pale brown stain at the center, a result of off-setting from an adjoining sheet, and this faintly shows through around the edges of the image. The stitching holes in the left margin have been partly filled in, there is a fold across the lower left margin corner and small thin spots in the upper margin corners where previously hinged.
