Catalogue Note

The present study in wash and bodycolour, showing a young woman in flowing draperies and with a stringed musical instrument which rests on the ground and which she supports with her right arm, is loosely related to a figure in Burne-Jones's composition The Hours (Sheffield Art Gallery).🦩 In the finished painting, which was first exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1883, the girl's head is shown looking more directly towards the spectator and leaning to her left.
