Condition

STRUCTURE: Relined. SURFACE: The painting is in good, stable condition. Some minor paint losses have occurred mainly in the bottom left quarter. An old repaired tear is evident in the middle on the left hand side; it runs to the left of the bread upwards 2 ins and then horizontally through the boys head, approx 6 ins. Prior to lining this painting may have been rolled as the craquelure seems to run mostly horizontally. UV LIGHT: Under UV light minor retouchings appear. There is one on the mirror, a further three in the top right quarter and a few in the top left quarter. Restoration has taken place across the boy's head. FRAME: Contained in a plain gilt wood frame. COLOUR COMPARISON: The colour is slightly darker that the catalogue illustration suggests.
