STRUCTURE: Original canvas and the structure is sound and secure. SURFACE: The paint surface is dirty. There are flecks of paint loss to the field in the centre of the composition and some small specks missing from the farmer's jacket. There is also a small tear, 1cm in length lower right and a small area of resulting paint loss surrounding this. There are also areas of light craquelure in the sky and to the farmer's sleeve lower right. FRAME: Held in a moulded dark gilt painted frame in fair condition. ULTRAVIOLET: UV light reveals retouching to the area of the aforementioned tear. COLOUR COMPARISON: The colours are generally paler than the illustration suggests.
