- MOTHER AND CHILD
carved white marble, on pedestal
- height 59 in.
- 150 cm
Condition
The surface has been acid washed resulting in a shiny finish softening the details and some yellow stains throughout. This acid wash was part of a cosmetic restoration likely due to erosion. Traces of dirt and cracks around circular base. A minor chip to the right side of the woman's knee and three small areas of infilling above that knee. Black stains to sone consistent with natural veining. The left arm of the woman has extensive infilling as has the right arm of the baby. Repairs and cracks to the left side of the rock on which the woman is reclining. The marble is dirty and will need to be cleaned. Extensive chips to the bottom molded edges of the sculpture. Please not that the pedestal has chips and is made of composite stone.

Catalogue Note
The pose of the figure and, in particular, the treatment of her hair are very reminiscent of Prosper d'Epinay's 1874 Salon entry, La Ceinture d'Oree (see Sotheby's, Londo💝n, May 20, 1994, lot 107).
A similar model sold at Sotheby's, London, May 19,🧜 1998, lot 512.
