Catalogue Note
The present work was likely painted during Kuhnert's second trip to Africa in 1905-06. While the script at the work's center left resembles Arabic characters, this "writing" appears to be for decorative effect as it is without obvious translation. The artist first signed the work at the upper left (now indistinct) and ten years later signed at the lower right.
