Condition
The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.:
This painting has been restored, although not recently and it would be beneficial to reexamine the restoration. The canvas is lined and the surface is reasonably well stabilized however, the cracking is quite raised and could be addressed with a new lining. In addition to the raised cracking the paint layer is slightly dirty and has been retouched.
The retouches are sporadically visible under ultraviolet light and a visual appraisal is better equipped to identify the restoration. The raised cracking has attracted some retouches. There is thinness in the shadowed side of the dress and drapery over the chair which has also been retouched. Some cosmetic restoration here and there has been employed to reduce and eliminate cracking and some other random thinness.
The book and most of the still life is in very good condition and a good deal of the figure is very well preserved. The face seems to have been reworked by the artist, which has caused some cracking the paint layer which has also been restored. While the condition is uneven in some parts, there is potential for great improvement.
