Catalogue Note
In 1895 at his summer home in La Rochelle Bouguereau completed the present work in preparation for his Le Gué (fig 1.) likely later fully realized in his Paris atelier. Seemingly satisfied with his early study, only subtle changes were made to the model's appearance in the finished composition. The same young girl appears in a number of the artist's compositions between 1894 and 1895, notably La cage vide and L'iris.
