Catalogue Note
Executed in 1957, this work is considered to be one on Congo's finest paintings, showing the bold confidence in the placing of marks and lines. His favourite fan-shaped pattern is still discernible, although at this stage he was beginning to break it up and vary it. There is a remarkable rhythm and balance to the design. There are only a small number of works of this quality, produced during his peak period of activity, during a three year study of his picture making abilities.
