Catalogue Note

Fabergé's practice of insetting coins into some of his creations was inspired by earlier German work. The coin in this box dates from the first year of the reign of Emperor Nicholas II, 1896. As the coin is lightly worn this suggests that it was mounted at a slightly later date. It is typical of Fabergé and his workmasters to update old styles and produce elegant contemporary works of art. Occasionally these coins, usually dating from the reigns of Empresses Elizabeth I and Catherine II, were part enamelled. For examples of this see: Sotheby's, London, 12th June 2007, lots 434, 491 and 492.

Occasion▨ally these coins, usually dating from the reigns of Empresses Elizabeth I and Catherine II, were part enamelled. For examples see: Sotheby's, London, 12th June 2007, lots 434, 491 and 492.
