Description

the front with a ground chased with stars and applied with figures of Christ and saints each holding a book, interspersed with cabochons of green and turquoise, with enamelled borders (later), the back (later) repoussé and gilt in diaper pattern, the ends with lapis ground with bands and rosettes surrounding a figure of a saint, one finial of crest lacking, the underside with various collection labels including one Morgan label inscribed P.M. 806 and printed 159, also with a red painted Morgan number 806.

Condition

This piece is composite and made up of elements from the 13th and later centuries. One finial of crest lacking. The front upper and side floral borders are later. Several "gems" replaced. Some nails replaced and lacking. The reverse with later repoussé copper plaques covering the wood core. One lower side border lacking. One lower side border original and enameled. The sides with some nails lacking and with wear, losses and fills. One panel with a red wax fill in places. Majority of original wood core extant.
