Catalogue Note
Weihrauch (op.cit.) convincingly attributed this composition to Danese Cattaneo, a Tuscan pupil of Sansovinꦓo and master of Girolamo Campagna, and he recorded three other versions in Cleveland, Reichenberg and Chicago.
Compare an allegorical figure executed by Cattaneo, for the tomb of Doge Leonardo Loredan (Donatello, op.cit., p.307). The figure type and stance as well🌠 as the treatment of the hands and feet, the heavy lidded eyes, pointed chin and centrally parted hair drawn into a abundant curls at the crown of the head are 𝔍all directly comparable to the present bronze.
