Catalogue Note
Wilson (op.cit., p. 422) explains that an attribution of plates of this type to the workshop of Maestro Lodovico in the Contrado of Santo Polo in Venice, is based in part on the similarity of the 'alla porcellana' decoration on the reverse. However, the lac💛k of arch♓ival information referring to this workshop makes a definitive attribution tenuous. A plate with a similar combination of motifs including a lightly sketched head of a man is preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and another similar plate dated 1544 was sold at Sotheby's London, March 22, 1977, lot 51.
