Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This canvas has been lined using wax as an adhesive. The paint layer is quite noticeably dirty and if cleaned, the painting would benefit. If the wax lining were to be reversed, the painting would benefit greatly. The condition of the paint itself seems to be very good and if the painting were to be cleaned it is most likely that no significant restorations would be removed. Therefore full restoration is encouraged to properly present this nicely preserved picture.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

Once credited to Joannes de Cordua, Fred Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague, has now attributed this painting to Abraham Susenier. Susenier was born in Leiden, but spent most of his life in Dordrecht where he was married in 1646 and became a member of the local guild.

This vanitas features objects that refer to the fragility of man and the tension between life and death, a popular tradition in 17th century Netherlandish art. In perhaps a more atypical fashion, Susenier also includes a self-portra✱it of Rembrandt, an object that woul𝕴d appeal to an erudite collector.
