Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This charming picture has been reasonably well restored and should be hung as is. The canvas has been lined and the paint layer cleaned and retouched. Although some of the restorations are still a little visible, in the lower right of the child's dress particularly, for the most part the restoration is functional.
Under ultraviolet light all of the restoration appears to be visible in dots and dashes throughout the picture. Thankfully there is not very much in the face, ruff or hands and it is the darker colors which seem to attract most of this restoration. While the restoration may be broad and unnecessary in some places, it is sufficient. There is one spot in the varnish in the center right side which has bloomed slightly and requires attention.
