Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This charming little painting is painted on a single piece of fruitwood which is enforced on the reverse. The surface is quite dirty yet appears to be in very healthy state. Some of the details in the face of one of the three kings on the left have been lost. In general however this picture is in good condition and if it were to be lightly cleaned and varnished, it would improve greatly.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

The delicate and precise manner in which this composition is rendered makes this small panel, datable to circa 1470-80, typical of the work of the Italian illuminator, Attavanti.

As one of the most successful illuminators of the Renaissance, Attavanti worked for such celebrated patrons as the Duke of Urbino, Federigo II da Montefeltro; Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary; Manuel I, King of Portugal; and the Medici in Florence.  At the center of tꦗhe artistic community, Attavanti collaborated with many of the other leading painters and illuminators of the Italian Renaissance, such as Domenico Ghirlandaio, The Master of the Hamilton Xenophon, and the brothers Gherardo and Monte di Giovanni di Miniato del Foro.  Documents show Attavanti also came into contact with Leonardo da Vinci.
