Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting has been lined with glue however, the paint layer seems to be a little unstable, above the head particularly, and this lining could be reexamined. The paint layer is quite dirty and will improve with cleaning. Under ultraviolet light hardly any restorations are visible but to the naked eye restorations are evident in the background, in the hair above the head, around the edges, perhaps in the chest and in the shadowed side of the face. In general however, the painting is in quite good condition and while some thinness and old damage may be revealed when the picture is cleaned, it would be certainly worth the effort since the quality and condition generally is very good.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
