Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This large painting has not been restored for a long time. The canvas has an old glue lining but structural damages in the lower left sides and a large hole beneath the leg of the woman on the right have become visible, so the lining should be reexamined. An old damage in the breast of the woman is still very visible and poorly restored and there is restoration along her arm and shoulder. There are broad repaints in Bacchus and in the angel's forearm and armpit. It appears that paint has been applied in order to brighten the dirty picture and as a result, this paint has also darkened. There is a good deal of foreign paint and sloppy restoration on this picture, but the actual condition of the painting beneath all of this seems to be quite good. Even though there is going to be a good deal of effort required to bring this picture back to a presentable condition, beneath all of this broad repaint there is most likely a perfectly healthy painting which in all likelihood, is going to be of better quality than can be seen today.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
