Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This canvas was lined roughly fifty years ago. At that time the painting was cleaned, retouched and varnished. The condition of the paint layer is not particularly good. There is a good deal of abrasion and retouching in the lighter colors in the background and the figure. There appear to be few retouches in the still life of the flowers but the paint layer is quite flattened as a result of the previous restorations. Despite the uneven condition, the retouches are good. The varnish is soft and can be dressed up slightly but the picture is more or less ready to be hung as is.
