Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This painting has been fairly recently cleaned and varnished. The varnish has become a little opaque in the landscape on the right side. The lining is old and not perfect but serviceable. There is a slight dullness to the picture which perhaps could be improved yet in general the condition in many areas seems to be quite good.
Under ultraviolet light very few restorations are visible and it seems more than likely that even if the picture were to be cleaned further, no unseen restorations would become apparent. The accuracy and placement of some of the retouches could be improved, as well as the varnish. The condition and quality of all of the faces and hands are of a very high standard, and perhaps some conservation efforts would be made to present the picture better. The lining could be improved and the varnish could be more saturating yet the amount of actual damage is minimum.
