The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting has an Italian glue lining which seems to quite nicely stabilize the surface. The paint layer is most likely quite dirty and although some discoloration over time has probably occurred in some of the colors, the paint layer does not seem to be abraded. Along the bottom and top and around the edges there are restorations in general, but in the bulk of the picture, conservation seems to be very minimal. There is very slight abrasion in the center of the grapes and in the shadows of some of the fruit on the ground, but with the right cleaning and accurate retouching, this is a picture which will become much sharper and more detailed without a lot of effort. Overall the condition is very respectable.
