The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting has an old glue lining which nicely stabilizes the paint layer. The picture has been cleaned, varnished and retouched. The retouches have been well applied and are visible under ultraviolet light around the nose, in a few spots in the upper background and in the blue cloak in the lower right. In general however the paint layer is in lovely condition and we recommend that the picture be hung as is.
