Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting on copper is in very fresh condition. The paint layer is delaminating slightly in the blue gown to the left of the face. The paint layer is quite dirty. The few tiny dots of restoration have been applied in the area where the flaking exists yet elsewhere for the most part the paint layer seems to be stable. If the picture were to be cleaned and retouched, it would be extremely presentable. The frame however is not attractive and needs to be replaced.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

The present painting derives from an original composition by Carlo Dolci (1616-1686) who was Mancini's teacher.  Another version by Mancini, signed and dated 1691, is in the collection of G. Pratesi, Florence.  This version, also on copper, is circular in format and is framed together with depictions of four saints (see G. Cantelli, Repertorio della Pittura Fiorentina del Seicento, 1983, cat. nos. 484-485, reproduced.  Another version, rectangular in format, was sold at Sotheby's New York, January 12, 1995, lot 35, for $15,000.
