Catalogue Note

This model, Ref. 5508, was first released in 1958 and was one of the last models of the so-called 'James Bond' Submariners. The nickname comes from the fact that models 🦩similar to thꦆis, without crown guards, were frequently featured in the Bond movies. Today any Submariner without crown guards is referred to as a 'James Bond' model.

The Ref. 5508, along with other Submariner models, Refs. 6204, 6205, 65🐭38, 6536 and 6536/1 are generally referred to as a 'Small Crown James Bond,' as the designs feature crowns with a diameter of five or six millimeters. During this period in the 1950s, Rolex also released Refs. 6200, 6538A, 6538 and 5510 which featured crowns with a diameter of eight millimeters. These models are known today as 'Big Crown James Bond' models.
