The movement is running, however it may require service soon. The imperfections to the dial in the catalogue photograph are in fact scratches to the crystal. The bezel has faded from black to a bluish-gray and is quite loose and will require securing. The case shows scuffs and some scratches from wear throughout. The numbers between the lugs are 5512 and 764697. The inside of the case back is numbered 5512.

Catalogue Note

This model, Ref. 5512, debuted in 1959 as the first Submariner model to feature the now-icon🔯ic protective crown guard case. By the second generation, such as the present lot, the watch featured a cal. 1560 movement, rated as chronomete♔r grade. For this reason, Rolex would print 'Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified' on the dial of these models.

Rolex would release a cousin to this model, the Ref. 5513, in 1962 that would be almost entirely identical except for the movement, a cal. ღ1530, which was not chronometer grade.

This second generation of this model also featured a crown guard with pointed ends. By the end of the decade, however, Rolex changed the design of the model so the crown guard had more rounded ends (see the following lܫot). Today, these earlier 'pointy' models are seen as more collectible in the market.
