Catalogue Note
Heuer released this model, Re🀅f. 1133, the Monaco, in 1969 in a manual-winding version as well as the present automatic version featuring the cal. 11 movement. It was the first automatic rectangular chronograph wristwatch ever put into production.
The model gets its name from 🌜the Monaco Grand Prix, one of the greatest and most famous auto races in the world. By𝓀 1969, Heuer was so closely associated with car racing that it was a logical jump for them to name a watch after the principality.
The watch would become famous in the 1971 Steve McQueen auto racing film 'Le Mans'. The actor was inspired to wear one in the film after seeing it on the wrist of his friend, the racing legend Jo Siffert. Today, the model is known in༒terchangeably as the Monaco or the 'Steve McQueen'. Unlike the Rolex Explorer II, which is also known as the 'Steve McQueen', the present model was actually worn by him on screen.
The B in the reference number refers to the blue dial. The back of the watch is engraved, 'Tool 033', which 🧸refeܫrs to the specific tool needed to open the unusual rectangular case.
Two similar examples of this model are illustrated in Halsinger, A. M., Heuer Chronographs: Fascination of Timekeepers and Motor Sports, 1960s-1970s, pp. 200-201 and 204-205.
