Condition

The movement is running, however it might need to be adjusted as it makes a sound when wound. The dial is very nice and in lovely condition with a nice two-tone finish. The case shows general wear with surface scuffs throughout. The outside of the case back is stamped with a head of Helvetica, a case maker's key and '.750 18k' in a box, which is an unusual feature. The numbers between the lugs are have nearly been polished out. The serial number appears to read 22311 and the reference number, 6305, is barely legible. The inside of the case back is clearly stamped 6305. Overall the watch is very nice.

Catalogue Note

The present model, Ref. 6503, is known as the 'ovettone',  Italian f꧑or 'l♈arge egg'.  It is one of the first models designated as a Datejust and also one of the last to be considered a 'bubble back'.

When Rolex released these 'ovettone' models in the 1940s, they represented🐓 the highest level of watc𒆙hmaking for the firm. The automatic movement was rated as a certified chronometer and the dial was very refined with its black and red date and elegant finishing. They were almost always sold on Jubilee bracelets, such as the present example.
