Catalogue Note
Kindersoielplatz im Berliner Tiergarten belongs to Liebermann's celebrated series of works depicting the bourgeoisie of Berlin at leisure. Liebermann bought his house by the Wannsee, on the outskirts of Berlin, in 1910, and the gardens of his home and the bustling crowds of Berliners along the outdoor cafés by the lake and rivers became the key subjects of his art. From 1917 onwards the artist painted many views of the park, capturing the light effects of different seasons or times of day and studying the relationship between nature and urban life.
In this work the smart crowd sits beneath a cool canopy of trees taking in the sun-dappled scene. Two children play with great concentration in the central pool of light, with a carriage jutting into the picture plane on a jaunty angle at lower right completi♋ng the composition. The scene of weekending urbanites engaged in conversation is typical of French Impression🌠ism, and in both technique and subject matter this painting reveals the influence of the movement on Liebermann's art. The vibrant, sun-lit colours and spontaneous brushwork through which the scene is rendered display Liebermann's technical facility with paint that gives his interpretation of Impressionism its unique character.
