Catalogue Note
For Impressionist painters such as Renoir, still lifes were considered to be the most commercially valuable, as they were the most popular among customers at the noted impressionist galleries of the time. This particular work belonged to Maurice Gangnat a noted collector of Renoir's works.
Renoir devoted enormous amounts of time to these still lifes, from carefully composed large format paintings, to small, vibrant and delicate arrangements, little more than sketches, such as this work, Grenades et raisins. The effects of light a🧔nd colour that play in both the fruit and the background, along with the rapid energy of the brushstrokes, make this a beautiful example of Renoir's late still life paintings.
