Catalogue Note
David F. Setford writes, "It was in portraying landscape and water, and the human activity seen on water and land, that Marquet found the most perfect vehicle for the simultaneously realist, naturalist and modernist synthesis that was the touchstone of his art. 'When the name Marquet is pronounced one imagines water, sky and boats.' . . . According to Jean Cassou, who speaks of Marquet's 'realm of water' this predilection came from the artist's childhood. 'Marquet was born near Bordeaux, which is a port, and he left it, without stopping, to paint other very diverse ports, such as Hamburg, Naples, Algiers. . .'" (From Fauvism to Impressionism: Albert Marquet (exhibition catalogue), New York, 2001, p. 7).
