Catalogue Note
Stanley Seeger's important collection of Picassos was sold at Sotheby's New York in 1993, and an introduction by John Richardson was included in the catalogue. Mr. Richardson noted the collector's particular interest in acquiring works from Gertude Stein's collection, such as the present lot: "When he embarked on his Picasso collection, Mr. Seeger decided to follow, insofar as it was possible, the footsteps of two eminent pioneers in the field, Gertrude Stein and the English art historian and collector of cubism, Douglas Cooper. Whenever he could, he acquired works that belonged to the Steins, with preference for ones that the artist had given Gertrude. A serious collection of Picasso's work should provide a microcosm of his development, [Douglas] Cooper used to say; in representing a specific aspect, a good drawing can be just as telling as a painting. Mr. Seeger evidently heeded these words" (John Richardson, Sotheby's catalogue, Stanley J. Seeger Collection, 1993).
