Catalogue Note

The present work, with its exuberant black brushstrokes, bold lines and striking colors, is a wonderful example of the joyful, childlike abstraction Miro aspired to during the late 1960s. Abandoning a more realistic and figurative approach, Miró developed a highly personalized vocabulary of signs, relishing whimsical and ambiguous shapes that take form in shifting and delightful ways. As Sandra Ditch suggested, 'the art of Joan Miró heralds a deep grasp of the marvelous. Beyond childlike innocence, romantic fantasy and poetic reverie, the marvelous for Miró connotes a cosmic perspective and focus on the dynamics of creation' (Sandra Stich, Joan Miró: the Development of a Sign Language (exhibition catalogue), 🌃Washington Univer💞sity, St. Louis, 1980, p. 8).

This work was used as a design for an exhibition poster: Salon de Mai, XXIIème Salon, held from May 2 - 22, 1966, at the Musée D'art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.

Please note the present work will be sold together with the poste💮r for which it was the desig🌼n, illustrated below.
