Catalogue Note

Trois figures dans un intérior resembles in both subject matter and style a number of representations of the family drawn by Picasso in 1962. In the majority of these works the figures are in period dress, and in this particular work the furnishings of the apartment and the dress of the men suggest the work was inspired by a late 19th century representation of an interior scene. In the 1960s the aging Picasso often returned to the Old Masters. Their works provided a source of inspiration but also represented the☂ legacy the artist felt he had to engage with and overcome to secure his standing in the artistic pantheon. The flagrant borrowing of scenes from his most beloved artists – Velazquez, Rembrandt, Delacroix, Van Gogh, Manet and Ingres were the usual suspects – was a process of psychological appropriation, reflecting Picasso's atavistic belief that he needed toꦯ subsume the work of his predecessors to cement his place as the apotheosis of this tradition.
