Condition

The painting has been executed on a hollow core wood panel: the front and back panels appear to be affixed to a flush wooden slat inserted along the side edges. The side edges and reverse have been painted white. The paint layer, estimated to be a 'duco'-like material, has been thinly applied with a slightly variable conformation in abutting vertical bands of varying dimensions with a semi-transparent quality and softly lustrous sheen. Very fine cracks are scattered throughout the surface, most likely corresponding to the grain of the underlying wood panel, and appear stable. Cracking has intermittently occurred on the side edges at the joins of the reverse and forward panel faces to the side edges. The surface has a subtle uneven quality due to matte swipe marks or discolored coating material, fine abrasions and scuffs. Several small raised surface irregularities are 30 ¼" from the upper edge and 7 ½ - 8 ¼" from the left. Scattered faint drip marks are in the lower right. A few small areas of inpainting are sporadically along the edges and on the side edges. An area of inpainting, with some surrounding cracking, is at 27 - 28 1/8" from the lower edge and 8 7/8 - 9 3/8" from the left: this is a repaired perforation where the pushed-in wood of the panel was brought back into plane and adhered into position. The painting is in good and stable condition. (This condition report has been provided courtesy of Amann and Estabrook Conservation Associates)
