Hans Stern (1922-2007), a German émigré living in Brazil, founded H. Stern in 1945 at the young age of 23. After falling in love with precious gemstones while working as a typist for a trading company, he starting a small gemstone trading office in Rio de Janeiro, and quickly expanded into jewelry manufacturing and gemstone cutting. By 1964, the company was known for creating and promoting international interest in colored gemstones, and Hans Stern was named "the king of colored stones" by Time magazine. With an interest in fashion, H. Stern organized the first jewelry fashion show in Brazil and in the same year was the only Latin American brand to participate in the London-based Victoria and Albert Museums' Modern Jewellery Exhibition. Nothing however, brought as much prestige and visibility to H. Stern as the 1980s launch of the Catherine Deneuve collection, inspired by the unforgettable muse of Bunuel's 'Belle du Jour', which was the catalyst for its next decade of designer jewelry. Since then, they have won several design awards and have become the jeweler of choice for Hollywood's red carpet glamour. H. Stern's creations have frequented the famous fashion editorials of Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, W and Marie Claire to name a few and is currently the largest jeweler in Brazil and Latin America and one of the most recognized jewelry brands in the world. Today the sons of Hans Stern, Roberto and Ronaldo Stern, continue the tradition of innovative design and love for precious gemstones.
